Hey there! My name is SYYPHER and I'm a freelance illustrator, mural artist, amature animator, cartoon and music lover from Melbourne, Naarm, Australia. I've been watching cartoons, painting, drawing and spray painting all my life, and I'm finally working hard towards making this the career that I know I was born to do.
SYYPHER is my mask wearing alter ego that I created to allow me to comfortably express myself through my paintings. In my personal life I can be quite an awkward talker, especially to new people, so by covering my face and creating a catchy name, I have created a confidence that I didnt know I could have.
By creating SYYPHER, I found a freedom to explore and draw things that didn't need to relate to me. SYYPHER became the faceless, genderless and ageless escape I didnt realise I needed.
So, how did I get here?
From a young age I wanted to be an animator, so I went to study animation at a local uni, and spent my spare time exploring comics, graffiti art, album covers, concert posters, graphic design and logo design to make my work unique and fun.
Life got in the way for a few years, but old mate COVID and the countless lockdowns we were forced into made me realise the crappy job I was working just to make ends meet, and the sudden change to an online uni course I didn't sign up for, was stopping me from having time to do what I truely wanted to.
I created my apparel line, Wicked Beings Apparel mid lockdown in 2020 to allow for further freedom from the everyday, boring COVID life I sometimes fall back into.
In early 2022 I officially dropped out of uni and worked hard towards crafting and shaping an art style that fit me just right. After months of work, I decided to define my art style as "super-flat, neon pop art". This allows me to combine my love of classic cartoons while also exploring the "acrylic neon art" movement that became popular on social media throughout the worldwide lockdowns.
What have I been up to lately?
Well, I've exhibited in numerous art galleries in and around Melbourne, including The Nabe in Kensington, the Brunswick Street Gallery, AGRA Gallery in Camberwell and the local Bacchus Marsh Community Art Show over the Queens (or is it Kings?) Holiday long weekend.
I won 2nd place in my age group at The Federation Art Prize in Corowa, NSW in late 2022 as well as having an artwork in the Your Pride Art Show in Queensland in support of LGBT youth. I also closed off 2022 by completing a large scale mural at K9 Zone, a local family run business in my home town of Bacchus Marsh.
I kicked of 2023 with a bang by being in the debut art show at The Corner Studio in Footscray, as well as the debut Rebirth Art Show in Sydney. I was then accepted to exhibit at The Other Art Fair in Sydney in May 2023. There will be much more to come!
All of my scenagins, commissions and the fun I have along the way is all documented on my social media.
